What is design?

Design encompasses all concepts such as arts and crafts, industrial arts, applied arts, industrial design, fashion design, furniture design, industrial design and graphic design. In other words, design is about shaping products and services where appearance aligns with function. In addition, it addresses communication, distinctiveness and identity.

The main concept of design

We can describe it by saying that design is not just art or just science, but draws on elements from both. Art is about creating something that expresses the author’s vision, ideas, and emotions, while designers can convey emotions and leave a lasting impression through their work.

The purpose of design is to solve a problem. To quote Steve Jobs:

"Design is not just how it looks and feels. Design is how it works."

Designers conduct research and gather information about the problem they need to solve: “Who is the person facing this problem? Why? How are others trying to solve it?” Based on this research, they develop general hypotheses and identify key characteristics that should be part of the solution. With these hypotheses, they need to experiment with different solutions and see what works and what doesn’t, in order to arrive at the best possible solution for the user’s needs.

This is especially true in interaction design. Using a digital design should feel natural and simple. The user should almost immediately be able to understand the rules and the meaning of the elements. The user is guided by an invisible hand made up of colors, shapes, contrast, and repetition.

Summary

Design should not just be something nice to look at; it must also have a function and solve a problem by ensuring that form and user functionality work well together. Design should also be simple and easy to understand, and feel natural to use. That is what makes good design.
