What does a CMS do?

In Norwegian, we often use the terms publiseringsløsning, publiseringssystem or publiseringsverktøy when we talk about CMS. In any case, we’re referring to the user interface used to edit, categorize, and publish content on a website. It can be the same system that is used to set up and edit the design, code, and functionality of the site, but it can also be separate from this.

Different types of CMS

There are a number of different types of publishing tools suited to different kinds of websites. Everything from simple do-it-yourself solutions like Wix and Squarespace to large and advanced solutions designed for bigger global companies and corporate groups. In between, we have flexible and scalable solutions such as WordPress and Webflow. It is important to choose the right type of CMS to get the right level of functionality and complexity, without overdoing it. A good CMS makes it both simple and efficient to publish new content, so you can spend more time on actual content production. At the same time, you need to consider security level and user access, optimization for loading speed, and other details. Read more about choosing a CMS in Fjellvann’s article here.
