What is a keyword?
Keywords are the words we use when we search on the internet. A keyword is the word we want the search engine – for example Google – to give us answers to. The different search engines use the keyword to provide relevant suggestions and information back to the person searching.
You know when you Google “running shoes” and countless types of running shoes appear? In this case, “running shoes” is the keyword, and Google answers your query by presenting you with multiple running shoe options.
Keywords in the context of a website
Search engines have large databases with full visibility into which websites contain which keywords. Google uses advanced algorithms to understand the context of the term you search for and ranks the search results based on what it assumes is most relevant to your query.
But it’s not as simple as your website automatically appearing in the search results where you might have hoped to be visible. Even if you offer a wide selection of running shoes, there is no guarantee that your products will achieve top rankings. Google has its own checklist, where it ranks the websites that have done a good job highest on the list, and ignores those with greater potential for improvement. And that is the consequence of not investing properly in keywords, which can cost you dozens of customers.
What impact do keywords have on SEO?
To avoid being poorly ranked by Google, it’s smart to find out what people are searching for. We do this by conducting a keyword analysis that tells us how often a keyword is searched. In other words, we identify the demand for the product or service by performing a keyword analysis. This gives you the opportunity to understand your customers and their search intent, while also increasing your visibility in Google.
Most of us use search engines to find information, which is why ranking high in the search results has become very attractive. If we look at Norway alone, there are actually several million searches made every day. These numbers show how important it is to keep track of keywords to increase traffic and potential customers to your website!
All of this falls under the SEO umbrella. These are the processes that make up search engine optimization (SEO), where specialists work every day to rank as high as possible in the search engines.
